In a recent press conference with United States President Donald Trump, he further emphasised his commitment to “making America great again” with more efforts to change and overcome the effects of its longstanding trade war with China.
The retaliatory imposition of tariffs on both countries has resulted in escalated tensions over the years. However, recent developments in the United States, including President Trump and China’s President Xi Jinping’s negotiations in South Korea, have shown agreements in more aspects regarding the tariffs.
When questioned about another possible truce collapse, Trump says that America could still produce many of the parts for the defence systems and other electronics without China’s rare earth supply, bringing concerns due to their rich reserve but inefficient production of rare earths.
Historically, America has been dependent on China for the processing of raw materials, which is provided because of its advanced infrastructure, which has posed as a major leverage against the US amidst the trade disputes. Despite China’s continued dominance, Trump continues to heavily emphasise the tariffs as a form of control for the United States economy. Trump has also mentioned his consideration to diversify and outsource with countries like Australia by working together to develop more processing infrastructure.
In response to a query about their truce, Trump insists that the tariffs, while detrimental, especially to many third-world countries, were imposed to protect and allow American businesses to thrive, along with the “good deals” established with other nations. “America is great because of the tariffs… we have made billions (because of it),” he continued, “and also (avoiding) exploitation from China.”
Trump further voiced his concerns about the poor quality of some goods from China’s imports and his strong adamance against their “violent influence”, referring to their involvement in weaponry and firearms, as well as their alleged cyber malware targeted at America. Hence, the tariffs are imposed to limit their exports.
Trump is hoping to eventually resolve greater conflicts with China along the way. “Xi is a good man… We can only look for a way forward if we work out [how to address this issue].” However, he also expressed his uncertainty about China continuing to permit “this sort of influence (violence)”.
The effects of increased tariffs on Italy and the greater Europe continue to persist. The European Union and Italy look forward to more diplomatic engagement between the two powerhouse nations. Both are cautious about efforts to create a truce failing, especially because of economic and political consequences.
With an uncertain future with high costs of living and the unpredictable global economy, Trump believes that as a great nation, America will be able to “work out anything (and) build anything”. However, there is also no guarantee that the US alone can make trade stable.
The news agency awaits further updates on the eventual succession of US-China diplomacy.
